Biographical notice
Ioannis Doltsinis has been educated in Aerospace Engineering at Stuttgart University, Germany, where he also earned the Doctoral Degree (summa cum laude) and performed his Habilitation for the Venia Legendi.
After completion of the Diploma studies, Doltsinis followed in 1969 the invitation by Professor John Argyris, one of the founders of Computational Mechanics, to join the scientific staff of the renowned Institute for Statics and Dynamics of Aerospace Structures (ISD) at the University as a research fellow for nonlinear mechanics. His responsibility was the subject of engineering plasticity developing Finite Element Methods of elastoplastic analysis, in the focus of international efforts that time. This work extended the range of the general purpose software ASKA (Automatic System for Kinematic Analysis) to the area of inelastic large scale computations in industrial engineering practice; equally PERMAS, the commercial version of the system. In parallel, he conducted R&D in Wide Span Lightweight Structures (originating from the unique roof of the Olympic Stadium in Munich 1971), Nonlinear Fracture Mechanics and Composite Materials.
Continuing as the responsible scientist for the R&D on Thermomechanics and Mechanics of Materials, he worked on the challenging subject of large deformation of elastoplastic solids and coupled field problems with applications in industrial metal forming. He was the first to consistently model supeplastic forming for french and german aerospace industry, and to develop process simulation on the grounds of hyperelasticity replacing in a theoretically transparent and computationally efficient manner various contemporary recipes as from hypoelasticity. In this context he initiated in his teams and founded the development of the Finite Element Programming System (FEPS) as a research tool dealing with highly nonlinear, physically coupled problems including thermomechanical deformation processes, viscous fluid motion, fluid-structure interaction and later hypersonics with non-equilibrium chemistry. The software, conceived for research purposes, has been denoted the first handling multiphysics (the term not been shaped at that time).
In 1984 he moved to the Institute for Computer Applications (ICA) then just founded at Stuttgart University, appointed then as the Deputy Director of the Institute. The position enabled interdisciplinary research along new directions: microstructural failure processes in multiphase materials, CFD for hypersonics with chemical reactions and Stochastic Mechanics. Research projects for industrial purposes refer to Plasma-sprayed Ceramic Thermal Barrier Coatings, Strength of Porous Ceramics as for the Reliability of Filtration Equipment, Re-entry Aerothermodynamics within the European Hermes Space Shuttle Programme and Stochastic Methods in Industrial Aerospace and Automotive Engineering. Most recent developments have focused on Stochastic Methods in Computational Mechanics.
Doltsinis was and is engaged as an expert consultant for Research Councils and Foundations within Germany (Volkswagen Foundation) and abroad (Austria, Slovenia, Romania, UK). He has been on the managing board of the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (ERCOFTAC), belongs to the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Institute for Systems Engineering and Computers (INESC), Coimbra, Portugal. He is a Fellow of the Wessex Institute of Technology, UK, were he was awarded the Eminent Scientist Medal in 2012.
As a visiting Professor at the University of Trento, Italy, he transferred knowledge on advanced computational methods in engineering. Subjects tought in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Stuttgart University comprise
Loading Systems on Aircraft,Elastic-plastic Structures and Continua (continuing),Stochastic Analysis and Optimization (continuing).
Research results have been published in numerous international professional journals. He is involved in scientific publishing processes as an editor and reviewer, currently acting on the editorial board of the International Scholarly Research Network (ISRN) Applied Mathematics. Based on experience in engineering research and educational lecturing, he authored the books
Elements of Plasticity – Theory and Computation, WIT Press, Southampton, Boston, 2000, 2010.Large Deformation Processes of Solids – Fundamentals and Engineering Applications, WIT Press, Southampton, Boston, 2004. Stochastic Methods in Engineering, WIT Press, Southampton, Boston, 2012.
